Wedding Health
Arranging a wedding can be one of the most stressful times of a woman's life. Our health can be easily overlooked in the pursuit of the perfect day. Often a positive focus on healthy eating and exercise decreases and we look for a quick fix to look our best.
It is the mission of Runaway Brides to encourage healthy and long term weight loss by adopting a regular pattern of exercise and a nutritious eating plan. We are aware that women take drastic measures to look their best, so much so that there is now a commonly used term which labels such measures. That term is "Brideorexia".
What is Brideorexia?
This term has evolved to describe women who lose weight at a dangerous rate or in unhealthy ways prior to their wedding. It is a form of anorexia and unfortunately it is a dangerous and wide spreading eating disorder.
Brideorexia is primarily characterised by extreme caloric restriction with the goal of starving the body into weight loss. This could include the use of diet pills or other techniques to encourage weight loss. In some instances a case of brideorexia may also be accompanied by bulimia, an eating disorder which involves binging and purging.
Like any eating disorder brideorexia can affect women of all ages and sizes.
Are there any signs of someone developing Brideorexia?
The signs of eating disorders can be difficult to detect because many victims of eating disorders attempt to hide their problem. Initially a warning sign could be repeated discussions about weight and wanting to look perfect, along with discussions of extreme diet plans.
Bridesmaids and family may want to keep brideorexia in mind so that they can create a supportive, encouraging environment in which the Bride's weight is not the primary focus. Of importance is that many people suffering with eating disorders are strongly resistant to intervention. If you suspect that someone you may know is suffering an eating disorder you may want to seek professional help from a doctor or psychologist that specialises in such areas.
How does Runaway Brides want to combat the onset of Brideorexia?
Runaway Brides hope to eliminate the spread of "brideorexia" by supporting and encouraging women to lose weight and tone up sensibly. This is achieved in a supportive environment, where exercise is fun and advice is readily on hand. Through exercise and education it is hoped women will realise they can feel great inside and out without taking unnecessary and drastic measures.
